Yeats Alive, June 26

7:30pm. $5 at the door.
Celtic Collaborative’s 10th show will celebrate the great Irish Nobel Prize-winning poet, W. B. Yeats (1865-1939). Yeats 150: Minnesota celebrates the birth year of W.B. Yeats will involve 10 actors performing, inhabiting, conjuring, and provoking to life the intricate spiritual passion and heartbreak of his questing poetry. Directed by Patrick O’Donnell and featuring Mike Casey, Brian Casey, John Concannon, Kevin Geraghty, Kathleen Heaney, Eddie Owens, Sarah Geraghty, Daniel Duren, and Mike Deignan, the production is part of a worldwide recognition of the vitality and enduring power of Yeats.

The show will look at Yeats in three broad phases: as a dreamy lovelorn romantic who became an ardent cultural nationalist (1880-1900); as a fierce champion of Irish artistic integrity and an early modernist (1900-1915); and, a national poet meditating on the tragedy and nobility of Ireland’s struggle to become independent and to free its imagination from life-denying ideologies (1916-1939). When performed (rather than simply read aloud), the poetry of Yeats is revealed as intensely dramatic and filled with spiritual contradictions, longing, doubt and “unquiet dreams.” This promises to be an exhilarating production.
