Hanneke Cassel (fiddle) and Mike Block (cello/voice) have been playing music together since 2007. Together, these dynamic performers present a diverse and exciting show featuring traditional and original music that draws from their Celtic, Amercana, and Classical backgrounds.
"A startlingly virtuosic and accessible new string duet has recently materialized: Hanneke Cassel and Mike Block. This duet has got to be one of the most exciting developments in the String World since the legendary Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas, and these two have upped the ante considerably by including ingenious treatments of modern pop songs, classical crossover covers, Hanneke's extremely soulful compositions and Mike's brilliant, often hilarious original songs. There appears to be nothing these two can't do musically, from the deepest traditional wellsprings to driving toe-curling acoustic fireworks. 2 huge personalities let us into their amazing musical world."
- Darol Anger, Grammy-nominated Fiddler and Berklee Faculy
"EXUBERANT AND RHYTHMIC, somehow both wild and innocent, delivered with captivating melodic clarity and an irresistible playfulness," says the Boston Globe about Hanneke Cassel's playing. Such charismatic fiddling has brought the native Oregonian many honors and awards. She is the 1997 U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Champion, she holds a Bachelors of Music in Violin Performance from Berklee College of Music, and she has performed and taught across North America, Europe, New Zealand, Australia, and China. IN ADDITION TO HER SOLO ACT, Hanneke tours regularly with Baroque/Celtic group Ensemble Galilei, and has performed with the Cathie Ryan Band, Cherish the Ladies, Alasdair Fraser, and Matt Glaser and the Wayfaring Strangers. www.hannekecassel.com
